History
The family name "von Hohenlohe" has often appeared in European aristocrat history. This family still exists and is, for example, related with the "Windsors" in England. Their roots are near the river Tauber-today a part of the Romantic Road and not far from Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
In the year 1232 they founded the convent of Frauental(today Frauental is a part of the Creglingen community). The nuns owned agricultural properties, vinyards and cattle.
Documents from 1395 prove that they had sheep.
The Shepherd's cottage-now a holiday cottage was built from the stones of the nearby Fort Brauneck which was demolished in the Farmers' war. Therefore it must have been built shortly after 1525 and is nearly 500 years old!
In 1976 the condition of the cottage was so bad it nearly had to be pulled down. Mr Erwin Keller, who then was a student, bought it on the condition to keep and restore it which took a quarter of a century!
Now it is used privately and can be rented as a holiday cottage.
Overnights in the Shepherd's wagon is available.
Traditionally shepherds travelled around with their sheep. Night and day they had to stay with their animals. They spent the night in two wheeled wooden wagons-a kind of caravan which had simple sleeping and cooking facilities.
Three of these wagons have been restored and are placed next to the cottage for your use.
